Go further together

Looking back, 2010 was a landmark year for our corporate responsibility (CR) strategy. We are dedicated to managing our business and our people in the most responsible way – and 2010 has enabled us to further build on this success. We have strengthened relationships by putting our customers first, have evolved Quality, Health, Safety and Environment standards, and put a lot of focus and effort into resourceful innovation. We are committed to going further together.

Managing our corporate responsibility is not just about doing the right thing; it is about creating value in the areas we can influence. With this in mind, we have developed our corporate responsibility into a dedicated programme called ‘Go further together – for our people, planet and performance’.

As the name suggests, ‘Go further together addresses the need to work more closely with our customers, neighbours, suppliers, communities and other partners – so that, together, we can achieve more. It highlights the pressing issues we face, helps to facilitate appropriate management behaviour and ensures alignment with our overall business strategy.

Through ‘Go further together’, we aim to continually improve the management of our people, our focus on the planet, and performance within our control or influence; whether this is through our business or our supply networks. Our commitment to ‘Go further together promotes responsible business practices within the marketplace, workplace and our community, to ensure that jointly we can make a real difference. This is summarised in the following:

MarketplaceIn the marketplace we'll build on our position as the UK's leading waste management company WorkplaceIn the workplace, we’ll be the best employer we can for everyone that works hereCommunityIn our communities, we'll be recognised for the positive impact we make

Veolia’s Executive Committee, with the support of Veolia’s CR team, takes the lead in ensuring our policy is integrated with the strategic objectives of the business. The team will continue to review performance with regard to our objectives and targets, and ensure everyone in the company gets the tools and training required. It is the Board’s responsibility to ensure that our business operates in a responsible manner, and the Board will review the policy and our performance against it on a continual basis.

By working closely together, we can listen, learn and make small changes in the right places to ensure the success of Veolia and its partners, both now and into the future. Together, we can go further.

Materiality

The annual review is a summary of our performance in 2010. It’s a snapshot; a year in the life of Veolia Environmental Services. To make this a fair summary, we have listened to your feedback on what issues you think Veolia should be concerned with. We asked stakeholders from a wide range of areas, including Local Authorities, commercial and industrial customers, community groups, CR specialists, the media, suppliers, trade organisations and our staff for their views. We considered these views and, through a quantitative process, cross-referenced our core values and shortlisted the most material topics that summarise Veolia in 2010.
