Building today for tomorrow

Integrated waste management at Padworth

A new Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) for West Berkshire, at Padworth Sidings, has been designed to significantly improve recycling and composting rates in the county, improve management of waste and meet the contractual targets that have been set. This IWMF will incorporate a number of individual elements that work together to contribute to the successful and sustainable anagement of household waste. This includes a new sorting technology, based on infra-red, which detects and sorts plastics automatically.

Merseyside – Gillmoss MRF

As part of our Merseyside and Halton PFI contract, construction of a 100,000-tonne-capacity Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in the Gillmoss Recycling Park will be completed in 2011. It will include a visitor and education centre, designed to increase awareness within the community of the importance of recycling and recovery, and a sustainable approach to the environment. The building will also have various environmentally friendly features, including a walkway utilising recycled and sustainable materials, rainwater harvesting and energy-efficient measures.

Southwark waste and recycling management

Materials Recycling Facility for the commercial waste sector at a site in Castle Donington

Work on our multi-million-pound waste treatment and recycling facility in Southwark, across the river from the City of London, incorporating state-of-the-art technology is due to be operational in early 2012. Built on the former gasworks site on Old Kent Road as part of the Southwark PFI contract, this, the first inner-city facility of its kind in London, is expected to set the standard for urban waste and recycling management. The site, which includes a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility, a transfer station and a Recycling and Reuse Centre for residents, will play a major role in fulfilling
Southwark Council's ambition to double its recycling rate.

Commercial waste at Castle Donington

One of our employees collecting recyclable material

We were proud to have opened a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) for the commercial waste sector at a site in Castle Donington, near Derby. This is a first-of-its-kind commercial MRF – able to handle 30,000 tonnes of recyclable material a year, including paper, cardboard, cans and plastics, from 2,500 commercial waste customers in and around the Derby area.

The MRF will also take recyclable material collected by Veolia on behalf of Amber Valley and High Peak Borough Councils, and the Derbyshire Dales District Council.

Energy recovery at Newhaven

As part of our 25-year contract for the delivery of integrated waste management services across East Sussex and Brighton & Hove, the development of a 210,000-tonne-capacity Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) at North Quay in Newhaven will be operational in 2011. The ERF will ensure waste that isn’t presently collected and delivered to a sustainable market is still diverted from landfill and turned into a resource, delivering 16.5 megawatts of electricity to the National Grid; that's enough to power 25,000 homes. The construction of the facility has involved engineering at its best, and has included sinking major parts of the plant some 15 metres below ground.
